Newark is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. Newark is an enclave, completely surrounded by the city of Fremont. The population is currently 43,693.

Geography

The southern end of the San Francisco Bay lies near the western edge of the city. California State Highway 84 runs through the city, and continues as the Dumbarton Bridge to cross the San Francisco Bay to reach Menlo Park. Interstate 880 serves as the eastern boundary with Fremont. Fremont, as previously mentioned, completely surrounds Newark

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.3 km˛ (14.0 mi˛). 36.2 km˛ (14.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it (0.21%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 42,471 people, 12,992 households, and 10,341 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,173.8/km˛ (3,039.4/mi˛). There were 13,150 housing units at an average density of 363.4/km˛ (941.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 52.22% white, 4.01% black or African American, 0.64% Native American, 21.30% Asian, 1.00% Pacific Islander, 13.75% from other races, and 7.07% from two or more races. 28.60% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 12,992 households out of which 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% were non-families. 14.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.26 and the average family size was 3.59.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $69,350, and the median income for a family was $71,351. Males had a median income of $46,061 versus $34,959 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,641. About 4.2% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.7% of those under age 18 and 6.9% of those age 65 or over.

Politics

In the state legislature Newark is located in the 10th Senate District, represented by Democrat Ellen Corbett, and in the 20th Assembly District, represented by Democrat Alberto Torrico. Federally, Newark is located in California's 13th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +22 and is represented by Democrat Pete Stark. Stark received a 93% progressive rating from a self-described non-partisan group that provides a "searchable database of Congressional voting records from a Progressive perspective", and an 8% conservative rating from a conservative group.

Economic

Cargill Salt, previously known as Leslie Salt, operates a large salt refinery in Newark which cleans solar salt produced in salt evaporation ponds in the San Francisco Bay. Other major employers include WorldPac, Risk Management Solutions, LTD Ceramics, ADVO, Corporate Express and Full Bloom Baking Company.

Wedgewood manufactured stoves in town from the 1910s until the 1940s. Peterbilt manufactured trucks in Newark from the early 1960s up to the mid 1980s.

Newark is home to the NewPark Mall, a thriving retail center with dual-spectrum anchor stores such as Macy's, Sears, and Target.

The former Sun Microsystems site near I-880, I-84 and the Dumbarton Bridge was purchased by BioMed Realty Trust. The campus, now known as the Pacific Research Center, is being marketed for biotechnology and R&D.

Newark is convenient to San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco as well as Oakland, San Jose Minetta, and San Francisco airports. It is also convenient to Bay Area Transit (BART).

Culture and Recreation

Every September, the city has a weekend dedicated to Newark Days.

Education

Newark is home to a new campus of Ohlone College, a member of the California Community Colleges system. Other nearby educational centers include the University of Phoenix, ITT Institute, and Unitek College. Major universities in close proximity include California State University East Bay (Hayward) and Stanford University (Palo Alto). Home to Schiling A.L. Elementary School.
